During the past decade, parents and other caregivers have discovered the benefits and joys of using sign language with preverbal hearing babies. Why use sign language with babies who can hear? Babies can control their arms and hands before they develop the oral motor skills necessary for speech, so signing allows babies and toddlers to express their thoughts before they can speak. Great for both babies and their caregivers! Research has proven that using sign language to communicate with preverbal hearing babies is beneficial in several ways:
- Babies and caregivers experience reduced frustration
- Signing stimulates creative and intellectual development
- Improved communication facilitates a closer child-caregiver bond
- Babies who sign tend to speak earlier and have a larger spoken vocabulary
- Parents, caregivers, daycare providers and grandparents will enjoy learning the techniques for introducing and reinforcing signs with babies and toddlers in this single session workshop
Workshop participants will receive handouts and a sign language reference guide for identification of 148 signs for reference at home.
Participants are encouraged to attend without their babies so distractions are minimized.
